On My Honor

We are spending the week reading aloud On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer.

In the first 3 chapters we have learned the following:

On the way to the park, Joel’s best friend Tony challenges him to take a swim
in the treacherous Vermillion River. Both boys have been warned never to go
near the river, but Joel gives in. He doesn’t want Tony to think he’s scared.

My questions for you 5th graders are:
  • What is peer pressure?
  • Have you ever been influenced to do something by a friend that you later regretted?
  • Why do friends have such influence over us?
Please respond in a comment below.

  1. I was influenced bye (Gary not real name) to go down a water slide the wrong way or they would push me in the pool and my brother would take my money.

  2. Peer pressure is when one friend tells another to do something they might be able to do but not you.
I have had peer pressure by my cousin!!! I did it because I want him to still like me and want to hang out with me

  4. I haven't done that stuff before, but I think that peer pressure is your "peers" putting pressure on you. I don't really know why people do it but it's mean. It's horrible to think about it happening to someone. But I guess that they do it and you've known them for a long time and you want to do it because you don't want to upset your friend.

  5. I have been influenced to do something by a friend and i regret it right now. This one girl told me to go with her, and I told her that I could not because I had to be home in 10 minutes and we were not going to have enough time to go the place that she wanted to. And then I gave in and said fine, I will go with you and then I ended up getting home later than I was supposed to.

  6. Well, peer pressure is a friend forcing you to do something. No. None of my friends really forced me to do anything. I do not know. Sometimes they just do. Sometimes they just don't.

  7. Peer pressure is being strongly influenced or forced by a friend to do something. For example, once in fourth grade I sat by some kids at lunch that were messing around, talking too loud, throwing food, etc., and I started doing that too. We got in trouble. I did regret it, and so I don't sit by them anymore.

  8. I think peer pressure is when someone keeps trying to force you to do something you know you shouldn't do. I don't think anyone has ever peer pressured me. At least if someone did I can't remember.

  9. 1-Peer Pressure is like your friend or some one is forcing you to do some thing bad.
2-Some one dared me to go some where later without asking my parents.
3- because they would think it is funny and they want you to do it because they don't want to get in trouble. They think they won't get in trouble even though they would tell you to do it.

  10. Peer presser is when your friend forces (wants you to do some thing badly and put presser on you.) you to do something. Once I was dared to jump into a hay stack and found out that I was allergic to it.
I think friends have influence over us because when they want you to do something they think it's going to be fun or its the right thing to do.

  11. Peer pressure is is that technically were your friend is putting pressure on you to do something and you can't say no. My sisters friend told me to call 911 and I did and we hid under my papas desk and 911 called and we didn't answer but nobody heard because they were all outside. And we did it over and over and over again
Friends have so much pressure over us because since they know that were their frind they think they can control every move we do because they know we like them.

  12. Peer pressure is when a friend forces you to do something, even though you know it's wrong. I have never had this happen to me. I think friends have an influence over us because they feel like you aren't daring enough to be your friend.

  13. Peer pressure is when you a friend is sort of making you do something. One thing that I regretted after I did it was when one of my friends was asking me to wash my hair, in the sink, at her house and I gave in,so our hair was wet and now it seems stupid! I don't know why I did it, but I was in kindergarten! I think that friends have an influence on us because we chose to be their friend so we wanted to have them at our houses while relatives you can't choose so you just kind of go with it. You can have a strong influence with family though too.

  14. Peer pressure is when someone is trying to get you to do something you don't want to do. For example, in the book Joel is influenced by Tony to go to the park and go swimming. That is peer pressure because Tony influenced Joel to go swimming.

  15. Peer pressure is being heavily pushed to do something by your friend. I have definitely done something that I regret when a friend put me under pressure. I lied to my mom about going to Annie's house(fake name). The only problem with Annie's house was her mom and dad smoked and drank in their house. I was unallowed to go in her house. I went anyway, my mom could smell the achohle and smoke...I was grounded. Our Friends have that influence on us because what most people want is to be cool. Thats Why I did it.

  16. Peer pressure is when someone is doing something that you have a hard time resisting and they'll say something like " come on! It's not that bad!" And then other kids might still do it, and pretty soon, you might start doing it. If I have ever been influenced by a friend that I have regretted? Hmm...Yes actually. I went to the beach one time, and me and my friend Savanna went into the water, and she was going really deep in there. Then she said " come over here! your so far away!" So I swam over there, then she said that if I held my arms up when the wave hit me, it would feel like I was flying. I tried, but I kept going under water and I almost drowned. I think friends are always influencing us because they always wanna be cool.

  17. Peer pressure is...Nervous about something.Yes I have had been influenced by a friend. To go to the park and he had his BB gun and why did I go cause I thought it was supposed to be target practice and then he said you have 10 seconds to hide then if I find you get shot in the foot. So he found the two other friends and I was the only one left ( thank goodness I was a block away inching my way home then he saw me move in the bushes and then he started to walk over, I ran like a bullet. I was hoping I was out of rang, but sure enough. Clack! He never got close to my leg, but he was close to puncturing my skin. It was infected for weeks. 1. Never get influenced by friends cause they'll mess with you until it's too late!
